i have a couple 1940s pennies???
whats a wheat cent?
You can start wherever you want. I would suggest you get a copy of the Red Book and read the first couple of sections. Then look at the price listings and photos to see what strikes your interest. Next join a local coin club, go to a coin show or visit a coin shop. Look around and get a feel for all the different options you have.
Just as a suggestion you could start with your pocket change and work backwards and forwards from there. Most people start with cents or nickels, since they are more affordable, and grow from there.
I have been collecting Lincoln cents for 40 years and have taken many side trips to different aspects of the hobby.
The point is to have fun.

It really depends upon what you are interested in. I recommend you obtain a copy of the book in the link below. Some people collect Lincoln wheat cents, Morgan dollars, silver or gold coins, commemorative coins, foreign coins, tokens, medals, etc. Some people search bank rolls. You could collect state quarters, presidential dollars, proof coins, mint sets. Collect what you want. I hope that helps.
